Jesus told this parable not for those who are like the younger son, but for those who are like the older son. In this story, both sons were lost, and the father sought to bring both sons into the family, where they belong. The younger son accepted, but the older son refused. Jesus leaves the answer of the older son unresolved, because God is asking all of us to make the same decision.
